Nieuw Dakota offers, with its series called 'Start-up', a stage to a debuting group of young, emerging and innovative artists.
This edition of Start-up presents the work of the artists from the Fine Arts Department of the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design. Artist and teacher at MaFAD Paul Devens curates this exhibition, with: Simon Weins (D), Eline Kersten (NL), Joep Hinssen (NL), Sara Bachour (IT), Gladys Zeevaarders (NL), Thomas Hütten (D), Maarten Davidse (NL), Dennis Muñoz Espadiña (D), Miriam Sentler (D, NL) and Shao Jie Lin (TW).
The presentation is on show from February 26 to March 26, 2017.
The opening is February the 26, from 16:00 to 18:00 hrs.
The initial position of this selected group of artists is the shift and notions of values within the current axis of time. We observe traditional systems become obsolete and potentially facilitate their own crash. As Paul Virilio coined this with the 'Integral accident' where at the construction of a building, the condition to the collision is created. If this notion of self-destruction of nowadays and tomorrows' systems and regimes, is already accounted for at the drawing board, can be issued.
The young artists start their practises at where global changes create the context, where data traffic explodes, where the mass migration of people and goods and the shift of power within constitutions ask for a reflection.
Consequently, the wheel needs to be reinvented. Perhaps the error of today is within the dropped stitch of a long time ago. The artists choose position towards this in every possible way and distinguish its particular value: or it is within the explicit contrastive, or the critic position is more hidden, or the failure is embraced and the ruin celebrated. The multiformity is explored and the value reinvented.
Start-up: Slow Accident is not an exhibition of individual body-of-works. It's an experiment in how a multiplicity of personal attitudes and opinions could merge and issue time and space on the spot. It's a research to the intrinsic value of every addition or intervention and the joint value as a counterpoint.
Nieuw Dakota is the drawing board for the invention of the existing, where the crash actually is intended. The Tabula Rasa of the space demands an obligatory involvement.
Paul Devens selected nine debuting artists with their distinct art practises, to meet up on each other’s ideas and to conquer the space.
Nieuw Dakota offers space to contemporary art at the NDSM-wharf at the north of Amsterdam. We program exhibitions, organize special events and produce temporary art projects in public space. We aim at cooperation’s with national- and international, curators, galleries and institutions. Projects are established following careful consideration and deepening collaboration. Thus, Nieuw Dakota contributes by its renewing, alternating and stimulating policy to the cultural climate in Amsterdam and far beyond.
