Bio
Martha Deed is a retired psychologist (Ph.D., Boston University), a poet and web artist, and Millie Niss’s mother and collaborator. She has written the history of their collaboration, “From Fluorescent Cocktails to Pure Cement” (2010), for Poemeleon. Her poetry appears in Shampoo, Unlikelystories.org, Edifice Wrecked, New Verse News, and many other venues. Her work appears in anthologies published by Red Hen Press, Unlikelystories.org,, Iowa and others.
Many of her videos have been published by dvblog,org. Her web installations included Correspondences (with Regina Pinto), Oulipoems and News from Erewhon (Iowa Review on the Web with Millie Niss), and Missing.
Her chapbooks include #9 (Furniture Press, 2004), 65 x 65 (small chapbook project, 2006), The Lost Shoe (2010), This is Visual Poetry (2010), and The November 2010 Project (2011). She curated and edited City Bird: Selected Poems (1991 – 2009) by Millie Niss (BlazeVox, 2010).
As a psychologist, Dr. Deed was active in patients’ rights, domestic violence intervention, and child custody issues. Her research was conducted under grants from the Violence Against Women Act, NYS Bar Foundation, Baldy Center for Law and Social Policy (University at Buffalo) and others. She has held New York State government appointments in the Patient Access to Medical Records Program and the Surrogate Court's Medical Decisionmaking Program. She is affiliated with Consumer Union’s Safe Patient Project network of patient advocates.
