This project has explored very simplistic design that still holds a message or is interesting without unnecessary detail. The project began by using text and image. The main focus of the work was looking simply at things, but with the assistance of text. Firstly, by applying text to public objects and highlighting messages that might be found in public spaces. The project then took a slightly different route. Still using text, I began to illustrate phrases. This developed further into animating phrases.

Initially exploring the concept of surveillance and the idea that we are constantly being observed, I used my camera as a ‘CCTV camera’ and became the surveyor. After long periods of exploration and experimentation, this resulted in three digital images in which I have drawn in ghostly figures of people who might have once been there. I then took this further and printed off three more images and painted on them with white acrylic and they are my final pieces.

I spent some time looking at newspaper reports and Internet news as research for this project particularly “bad news” as I was keen to try and draw out the essence of humanity from the worst situations.

I found that I was focusing mainly on the war in afganistan and the tsunami disaster, concentrating on injustice and the missing. I have made a series of paintings and drawings from found images online from news reports and entwined them with poetry, one from an active soldiers girlfriend and one from a missing girls father.

As part of my manifesto, I’ve been painting on wood while being inspired by different types of music. I wanted to make my work eye catching and interesting, so I’ve used bright colours and interesting materials to produce my work with. My aim was to produce something exciting, thrilling and unique. I wanted to produce something that has a positive vibe and feel about it, and promote a creative, new, fun generation for art.

You will find more information on my Flickr page of the music I was inspired by when I produce each individual piece, and all the materials I used.

As an Observationist you are the one who sits silently at the back of the room. Often forgotten, you are the one who listens and observes.

You are the thinker, constantly looking, listening, taking in your surroundings; feeding that ever present curiosity.

As an Observationist you put truth from your observations and experiences onto paper.

You observe and question authority and the roles of the human race.

As an Observationist you strive to make people stop, to think, to look and to listen; a rare enjoyment these days from the hussle and bussle that is the modern life.

Qualification:

But to be an Observationist you must first adhere and agree to the following rules of enrolment:

To be an Observationist you must accept people for who they are on the basis of race, ethnic origin, religion, disability, gender, age and sexual orientation. Any malicious or extreme hate against these groups or individuals is not acceptable and you are not welcome here.

The same attitude applies to other artists and their work. Acceptance for what other people enjoy is vital, conflicting opinions are allowed but must be shown tastefully and they should not right out other works completely.

What we are all about:

The Observationists are complex and observant people and this is reflected in their artwork. This does not necessarily mean that the artwork has to be realistic, more that the marks that are made are truths that have come from the artist, and only become apparent when a subject is looked at intensely. It is an exercise to be practised and enjoyed as everyday objects look different when you REALLY look at them, whether it is a garden hose, a friend or a written article from a newspaper.

The Observationists although quiet and reserved in personality, break their personal barriers through their artwork and exude confidence through it.

The Observationists are unafraid to use themselves in their artwork, not necessarily as a representation of themselves entirely but to take on roles or alter-egos in order to make a point or to show an observation.

The Observationists believe that questioning the social restraints; controversial opinions, and political issues are important. The idea of bringing light onto something that is normally not thought of or talked about in order to gain awareness are what excite and inspire you.

The Observationist believes that freedom for expression is subjective, that no, we are not free to say whatever we want and that we do not deserve that freedom. You should give others respect as you would want to be respected, and think carefully about what you say and what you choose to show.

Conflicting and unpopular opinions are welcome and encouraged, but only when expressed tastefully.

Sometimes the Observationist has nothing to say at all and just want to open people’s eyes to the beauty in the world.
