The hoe is a plow and the corn's
pop-pop-pop gunfire after the drummer boy,
swords into plowshares and hoe beats the beet,
  rutabaga, turnip, turn
vegetarian. I swore I'd never eat
root vegetables and crackers made of paste
after I got a job. Guns and butter.
  Checkers come in two colors,
as do grapes.
Yellow grass? Play checkers drunk? Another game?
The train runs on its tracks, the tractor runs on grass,
but nature isn't to industry deferred.
The tractor's tires keep the motor from sing-
ing, the locomotive runs, "clack clack"
over gaps in the rails.
Draw the conclusion, the gold spike presentation,
the field or a road with a sign, "farm implements, keep right."
If a cup is a net without holes, riddled chalk makes wind and water sing
(Dover, Key West).
Throwing "ish" away from fish and caution, adding lower
yields flower, apple minus appl and plus what makes a vowel longer
makes parents long for industry.
  I mean children.
  I mean the
accomplishments
of plants.
