Please send us your comments and feedback on Mute's 100% cut by ACE this week. We are hoping to set this in the context of the broader cuts across the arts and society, which represent a sustained assault on the conditions for free expression, critical thinking, and independent production – be that directly or indirectly.
On Friday night the Harris Museum and Art Gallery in Preston opened an exhibition called Current (produced in partnership with Folly). http://www.current-experiment.org.uk/ The first piece of digital art to be collected as part of the Harris Museum permanent collection was also announced as Thomson & Craighead’s piece 'The distance travelled through our solar system this year and all the barrels of oil remaining' (2011)
Last night about 25 people gathered at i-camp in Munich for "Update the Upgrade!" - an informal evening of short presentations about what people are up to at the moment. It was organised by the Upgrade! München team, at the suggestion of artist Susanne Wiegner, who was one of five presenters during the evening.
Recently I read Claire Bishop's excellent article 'Con-Demmed to the Bleakest of Futures: Report from the UK' (http://www.e-flux.com/journal/view/209). Where she argues "that in the wake of the general election in May 2010, which resulted in a Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition-the UK’s first coalition government since 1945—the ensuing cuts to culture cannot be seen as separate from an assault on welfare, education, and social equality.
Although I am not an artist nor an expert in any way, I have a very strong faith in art, tremendous respect for artists and those who enable and convey art in so many different ways. I feel privileged to be able to make a small contribution to that with my work as a translator. Admittedly, some artists and art projects feel closer, mean more to me personally than others, but I am in an extremely fortunate position to be able to become at least somewhat acquainted with work that I might otherwise not have been aware of.
