Since the invention of the first mobile phone that looks back in the 80’s, or maybe earlier (?), we are confronted by a huge technological evolution that makes cell phones integral part of our everyday life. Who could imagine, a couple of years ago, that those “weird” portable phones would change not only our way of life but would also become part of experimental use within the Art field. Words like 3G, Bluetooth, sim cards and software applications are in use of our every day vocabulary. Phones became “smart” and humans smarter!
Mobile phone technology has drastically evolved in the past years. It is no longer possible to refer to a mobile phone as a simple communicative device, with the soul purpose of establishing dialogue through calls and texts. In a sense, the mobile phone has become a tool, with all the conceptual and practical implications that the term involves.
To understand this video, it is necessary to be aware of what happened two years ago. Iran is well known for filtering the Internet but the government has moved to do the same for mobile phones. Nokia Siemens Network has confirmed it supplied Iran with the technology needed to monitor, control and read local telephone calls.
