art+reflection+discussion+pie= artist in residence
By Rachel Beth Egenhoefer - 09/04/2008
So here I am, in this magical space know as Furtherfield. I’ve just taken a homemade toasted almond pie crust out of the oven for a little dinner party later tonight, and am now sitting with a cup of tea in the quiet and still HTTP gallery debating how on earth I start this blog. As the first artist in residence here I feel quiet honored to be here. It’s a live/work space where I’m the only one who lives here, but others come to work here. It kinda feels like having your friends over to play every day. Even though it’s a warehouse in London it kinda feels like a cabin in the country – cozy and comfy. Yet there are projectors hanging from the ceiling and wifi and tons of wires around so it’s really not at all like a cabin in the woods.
I’ve just completed a 3 month stay in Brighton where I worked at the University of Brighton and did a small exhibition of work in progress (or “Residency in Progress”) at Lighthouse. I’ve now come to Furtherfield to spend the next 3 weeks finishing up my UK residency. It has a very different feeling, obviously in space, environment, etc., but also in terms of time. I’m thinking of it as a buffer zone, or breathing space, a time to reflect on the intense period of making I just had and try to make sense of it all before returning to my “other life” (which I don’t really remember what that is?) So while I do that, Ruth and Marc have invited me to share my experience as the Artist in Residence via the blog, which I’m excited to do as a way to engage in a new community. So please feel free to chime in with questions, comments, anecdotes, or ideas.
In the mean time, I’m working on a publication for Lighthouse, trying to find a film lab to develop Super 8 film in London, waiting for my electronic fabricated knitting needles to arrive, reading, writing, and oh, I have to go finish my pie for my guests tonight.
