The Jeremy Hart’s article is about new possibilities to record a movie with mobile phones. In addition, it is about a new Japanese festival focused just on this specific platform.
If 20 years ago a video camera was expensive and hard to handle, since the digital cameras these difficulties are disappearing. This change started when digital cameras were developed with a recording movie option. If this option were simple and primitive, nowadays some smartphones record in a high definition resolution. Every new platform needs a new language and it is what Professor Masaki Fujihata is trying to develop. On one hand I agree with his idea that people do not need to try to imitate big Hollywood films, on the other hand I disagree with the idea of the necessity to show these movies on a small screen.
A mobile phone is not a professional camera. A clear audio or focus effect, like any other effect, is impossible to record using a smartphone. As Fujita said, by using mobile phones you can make very spontaneous films. For him the traditional movie is more like fine art, almost like a painting, but a mobile phone movie is more like a sketch or a memo. It is possible to tell a history using a mobile, however you need to add audio after recording to make dialogues more clear. The narrative is different as well. It looks more improvised. However, I think the idea of showing in a small screen is not good. It is More important is to know how the artist dealt with the limitations that this platform imposes. Additionally there are different mobiles with different screens and quite similar cameras, which could make the result different depending on the screen displayed.
Finally, as Toru Oyama said, the new mobile technology combined with new broadband technology allows everyone to share movies with the whole world in a couple of minutes, often faster than professionals. And this message can be spread very quickly like happened during the Arab Spring when many movies were uploaded to YouTube and the world was informed almost at the same time that happened.
Concluding, mobile phone movies are different from everything. They are more portable than digital cameras, what makes easier to record day-to-day situations and easier to handle than professional cameras, however it has its own limitations, and requires its own language as well. Also, it is faster than any other way to share your message or your point of view.
