has anyone seen my paradigm?
By Helen Varley Jamieson - 07/03/2007
it's been a bad day up at the university; not only did i skip my lecture (10 days into the semester & i'm running at 50% attendance), but - worse - i can't find my damn paradigm. i imagine i've carelessly left it lying around somewhere in UpStage - someone must have seen it, there was such a crowd there tonight. maybe someone else picked it up by mistake ... it's quite a nice paradigm but it's really nothing special, not something anyone would want to steal. it's about so big, fits in your pocket, & it's a shade of green that i'm quite partial to. it's a disctinctive paradigm - a little bit worn and actually held together with gaffa tape; and there's a little chip on its shoulder. ok, quite a big chip. in fact, it is the chip. to be honest, i don't know where the original paradigm is, i just found this chip lying around one day in cyberspace & it appealed to me so i picked it up & i've been carrying it with me ever since. i know i should try to track down the real owner & return it so the two pieces can be reunited, but i haven't got any other paradigm so i thought i'd hang onto this scrap of one until i find a paradigm of my own.
so - have you seen my paradigm?
& let me explain about the lecture - it's not as bad as it sounds. the UpStage walk-thru was scheduled for the same time as my lecture, but we'd done this ages before i knew my timetable. it was a great walk-thru, lots of participants, but i had to abandon my group & run a the compulsory tutorial, which was unfortunately pretty boring. not so the walk-thru - when i returned an hour later there were still 5 people jamming away.
i am slightly concerned that i could have an attitude problem. & a little bit worried about where my paradigm has got to. maybe if i unpack a few things i might find it ...

Hi Helen I think there's a lot of synergies here on this blog space and I hope to be more active on it soon. There are several papers I've been collecting on networked performance - if you would like be to share them I can and perhaps we can have a discussion on them. Hope you find your paradigm ;)sharing
hi camille, i thought i had replied to your post but it seems to have vanished (like my paradigm ... ) i would love to share & discuss the papers you are collecting, & hope i can contribute as well. h : )Karla
I could make you a a little paradigm shft to wear for the remainder of your southern summer - c'est de rigeur a Londres! xxparadigm shift
please do! i'm sweating so much that i have to change 3 times a day, so if you could unpack a few that would great. can you do episteme shifts as well? h : )paradigm shift
maybe just take that dang paradigm off & toss it out EVERY 15 seconds. they just get wrinkled and in the end aren't too reliable in dealing with in-your-face weather. I've heard there are chameleon-like paradigms which allow the wearer to appear to blend in the the local dress codes, but that might be trouble down the line -- being mistaken for a chameleon rather than the productive, creative person that you are! or, I remember my MFA bad attitude dictated that I say "eff-em if they can't take a joke!" to all those people demanding you wear the same old paradigms everybody is wearing... whups, not good advice for getting socially-issued paradigms that protect against bad financial times... hmmmtoo hot for paradigms
i have seen those chameleon paradigms, now that you mention it - & yeah, they're not really my thing. especially the way some people are wearing them with those horrible belts. anyway it's so hot here that every paradigm i've tried on today has got really sweaty & stinky & stained so i've given up for the time-being & am just going naked ...Paradigm Shifting is Human Behaviour...
I think that it is quite interesting how contemporary art is engaged in exploring its own phenomena regarding paradigm shifts, especially within the realms of art, technology and academia. I feel that traditional art as in painting, had an equivelent sense of what a paradigm shift was, but more from a formal and visual perspective - such as 'Push & Pull', frequently proposed in Greenbergian formalism for Abstract art. The Paradigm Shift was originally a scientific term coined by Thomas Kuhn in 1962, but was swiftly exploited by other less scientific practices very soon afterwards. Perhaps now, the practice of 'Paradigm Shifting' has reached an almost evolutionary stage and is building itself to be a genre, in its own right. Especially if we consider the shifting of traditional roles in art and how such singular forms of working have been changing in respect of Media Art. Some straight forward examples can be observed from within our own already connecting field(s), such as artists becoming curators, audiences becoming artists, techies becoming media artists, performance artists becoming techies, curators becoming artists - it goes on and on. A contemporary and lateral, creative behaviour that breaks down the singular notion of 'one' as creator, or singular object as an 'island'. Recognising connections and crossovers between things and how they relate, not only metaphorically but also functionally and practically. Traditionally, in computing and in art, especially regarding its top-down canon making formula; we were given a historical context of a westernized 'one size fits all' policy. But because of demands in computing use has been forced to instigate more functional cross-overs, into not only business or scientific use but also pleasure and art creation, as well as community interests demanding networked and peer to peer, grass roots and D.I.Y resources (social networks as well ugh!). 'Paradigm Shifting' is now as natural as drinking a cup of tea, and people are not always aware that it's actually happening. So it organically becomes more connected with human beahviour also, not always consciously... I think that many are realising that 'Paradigm Shifting', is now human behaviour.Paradigm Shifts We Know and Love: The Earth Aint Flat
On a Macro level, anything where the world order changes is a paradigm shift e.g. end of the cold war. On a micro level, you have ADSL knocking out fibre optics as an industry. Its about new ways of seeing. Or believing.Perhaps it's a perception thang - Paradigm Shifting that is...
Hi Helen, Perhaps it's a perception thang. MEZ just mailed me an excellent image of a Paradigm shift that looked so cute and fluffy that I am sure that even the most hardened, anti-paradigmers would feel more accepting of it all... Here it is - Thanks MEZ! It takes a while to load on your browser but worth it...the paradigm moved for me
that is stunning! no wonder it takes so long to load, with all those intricate filiaments of theory weighing it down. thanks so much marc & mez - i can feel my internal paradigm moving at the sight of this. h : )
